Eric Hosmer and his Patriot's

After watching highlights from the Kansas City Royals victory over the Yankees on Thursday afternoon, and from realizing that one of my fantasy players will lose time because of his arrival, I took a peek into who this Eric Hosmer (6'4, 230 lb) guy thinks he is. Well, he’s good; very good, and he’s got a lot company where he’s from.

Hosmer has somewhat burst onto the scene after being called up by the Royals recently. He’s hitting .333 with 2 homers and 5 RBI's in 6 games (21 AB). He’s also walked 5 times, stolen a base, and been walked intentionally. The OBP of .444 is nice early work.

If you look back at Hosmer’s minor league statistics, he really “matured” last year in Wilmington (A+ ball) and Northwest Arkansas (AA). Hosmer hit .338 over 137 games, had 20 HR’s, 86 RBI’s, was 14 of 16 stealing bags, and struck out only 66 times (586 plate appearances). He also had 59 walks.

The Royals had no choice to bring him up to the big leagues when he began 2011 in Omaha (AAA) by hitting .439 in 118 plate appearances with 3 bombs, 15 RBI’s, 3 more stolen bases, and only 16 K’s (with 19 BB).

Pedigree? The intriguing fact about Hosmer, the 1st round pick by the Royals in the 2008 Amateur draft, is his team of high school standouts at American Heritage School in Plantation,Florida. Including Hosmer, 6 players have been drafted from the American Heritage Patriot’s varsity baseball team of 2008:

Nick Castellanos, a 6'4, 195 lb 3rd baseman, is 19 years old. Nick was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 1st round of the 2010 MLB Amateur draft. He is currently #65 prospect ranked by Baseball America. He is currently with the Tigers West Michigan "A" club.

Deven Marrero, a 6'1, 180 lb 3rd baseman, is 20 years old. Deven was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 17th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur draft. He is currently playing for the Arizona State Sun Devils of the PAC-10 conference. He's hitting .397 and has 42 RBI's in 42 games.

Adrian Nieto, a 6'0, 200 lb catcher/first baseman, who defected from Cuba when he was 4 years old, is 21 years old. Adrian was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 5th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur draft. He played last year for the Nationals Hagerstown "A" club.

J.C. Sulbaran, a 6'2, 220 lb starting pitcher, is 21 years old. Juancarlos was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 30th round of the 2008 draft. He is currently playing for the Reds Bakersfield "A+" club. He did have 83 strikeouts in 79 1/3 innings pitched last year for the Dayton "A" club.

Brandon Sedell, a 6'0, 210 lb catcher/third baseman, is still playing at American Heritage School. Brandon was also drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 1st round of the 2008 MLB Amateur draft.

I grew up in San Mateo, California, and remember Barry Bonds at Serra High School (later Tom Brady and Greg Jeffries). The impact these players had on their respective high school teams was huge. And no, I'm not comparing Hosmer or any of this classmates to Bonds, but can you even imagine the quality of play the 2008 American Heritage Patriot's brought every day?

Pretty cool!
